I use Motzarella and have no problems with retention or missed posts?

In the grand scheme of things, Motzarella goes down more often than the
commercial servers, and if it doesn't lose all that many posts,
sometimes they take longer to arrive. Individual.net rarely goes down
and it never misses a post. Neither one carries binaries.

At the moment, I have acounts with DataBasix, Altopia, Datemas,
Motzarella, NIN and X-Privat, so that's my current personal basis for
comparison in this discussion.

Thanks for your observations about this problem. I have reported
similar problems with my ISP (Mediacom) for several years

When I first encountered the problem with them (they only carry
posts for about 24 hours) - several years ags and mentioned it
to them ... they said that every ISP was doing (or going to do)
the same thing. Unfortunately, I had no way to verify - by
experience - what they claimed: I can not get high-speed
internet from any source but my cable company (or a satellite
company, which I do not think will be an improvement): my local
phone company monopoly does not offer DSL in my area.

I do not object to paying my way; it may be possible that there
is no economic way to provide "free" newsgroup service. I
suspect that we may need to give the issue greater thought.

[By the way: to save me from having to research Bertrand
Russell's writings; can you tell me if the "man" referred to in
the quote in your signature refers to man, the homo-sapien, or
to someone of the male gender?]

There are more than a thousand usenet providers. Some of them are quite
good, some suck.

Mankind, male, female and indeterminate.

AstraWeb... I have a 90 gigabyte indefininte download account for a
reasonable one time price of $25, and after 3 years still have about
85 gigs left to go. They definitely have the binaries.

You purchase a seperate usenet account from a 3rdparty.

Tell me about Dustin. You'll soon see me on a new NSP :-(

Are you going to use a free one or a paid one, Dave? The best
non-commercial server I know is news.individual.net, and it costs
less than USD$15/year. Most of the truly free servers don't have
great retention, and they miss a lot of posts.

Does this server carry binaries?

No. I don't know of any good free or low-cost binary news servers.

Shit!

Rhonda, if you should happen to come across a reasonably priced server
offering access to the binaries groups, please let me know.

Are you doing a lot of binary download or just occasionally? Teranews has
access to the binary groups as well as several pricing plans based on
download bandwidth. Their (almost) free account costs $3.95 as a one time
setup fee and it does have binaries.

My requirements are thus...

I don't mind paying a modest yearly fee. Here's what I am looking
for...

1. Binaries. I won't be downloading that much per month.
Definitely less than 200MB/month

2. Allows obfuscating email address as I do here.

3. Doesn't too aggressively block spam. I need to see the BS to
find malware and malicious activity, etc.

4. Does not append a NSP spam signature to every post.

Yes, I have the same requirements/needs. So I'll be monitoring and
hoping someone knows of a decent one.
