|
|
Hi, I would need to use QB Pro at a job I might be doing in a couple
weeks. Is it fairly easy to self-teach QuickBooks in a couple weeks? I
already know Excel fairly well, I suppose that helps. Is it pretty
much, common-sense use for anyone used to the Office Suite?
Adding to the difficulty, I want to get a handle on it by practicing at
online tryout/tutorial sites if any are available since I can't afford
to buy the SW right now. Thanks. |

No. There's nothing about Excel that implies accounting.

Well, there are standard Windows-style menus, if that's what you mean.

These are questions you should ask the person who might be hiring you.

If you know something about bookkeeping, perhaps. If you don't, you're
basically SOL methinks.
In two weeks your only hope would be to get one of the many
texts/tutorials and try to cram but you've no hope of trying to appear
as an experienced user in that time frame.
Your better play would be to 'fess up you've no experience but you can
learn quickly and hope that suits well enough...

NO!
Obvious you don't know enough to know where to start. |

My suggestion would be to buy an old copy off e-bay or somewhere.
Make sure it's sold "un-registered" with full install code and user guide book
type thing then install it and go through setting up a company.
Add stock items or whatever depending on company use.
then add sales, make PO's receive stock (with or without bill)
create invoices, add customers, run off reports, print off tax reports, pay
bills, write cheques, reconcile accounts, blah blah blah...
It's more a lack of knowledge of business operation than use of program that
would hinder you.
Every company will do things differently, but if you have been involved with
company accounting and operations then QB is really a GUI spreadsheet.
Knowing what you should be entering where and the process of order, supply,
invoicing, etc etc is what you need the knowledge of.
Being able to fart around creating your own make believe company to mess-up
without risk will be the best way of learning, and QB comes with sample
companies with data including sales etc ready to play around with.
We migrated from QB 6.0 to 2004 with very little problem as the 2 packages were
very similar even though about 6+ years apart!
Should be able to pick up an un-supported version for but a few pence!
Cheers
Pete

Unless you know the principals of bookkeeping, tax requirement and
provisions, you will never grasp enough of QuickBooks to actually do the
job.

I (the OP) saw an ad, and they (job shop place) want basic admin. |
assistant help. I don't think they want "an accountant", just someone
who can keep track of their positions etc. I believe the key issue will
be the QuickBooks usage as such, not details of accounting practices.
BTW, I thank all for their helpful and rather cogent responses.

QB is a well documented computer software program. It can be learned in a
day -- takes a while to master.
Much like MS Word or Excel -- you can learn to enter data and do simple
manipulation in a day or so.
But, also as in Word-- if you are not proficient in writing then you will
not get great results. A word processing program will not turn you into an
author and QuickBooks accounting software will not make you an accountant or
bookkeeper.
If the job only requires that you be able to manipulate/enter data then
sure, you can learn the software quickly. |

If QB is up and running already, and you are mostly entering data (at least
to start) that is a much simpler proposition than setting up a company from
scratch. |

yeah, I don't think I'd be setting up a company, just keeping track of |
what they do and not even the deep accounting or judgment calls on
categories etc. Really, the question is about the ease of picking up the
SW. |
